Friday, September 17

Family Weekend Check-In & Kick-off
1:00 – 5:30 PM
Student Union Ballroom A (272)

Check-in for Family Weekend begins on Friday afternoon. You can pick up your Family Weekend registration materials, favors, and tickets. In order to pick up Family Weekend bundles and registration materials, you must bring your photo ID or event receipt(s). Please save these receipts after you have finished registering for the event. We can accept electronic receipts. 

We encourage you to have your student pick-up your Family Weekend Bundle  if you are unable to pick it up during this time frame.

While you are in the Student Union, be sure to check out these additional activities:

  • Student Union Tours — Information Desk (first floor) from 2-5 PM
  • Recreation Space — Union Station (first floor) from 1-10 PM
  • Photo Booth — Second floor, outside of 270 from 1-5:30 PM

Big Orange Pantry Donation Drive
1:00 – 5:30 PM

We welcome your family to bring hygiene products to donate to the Big Orange Pantry. The Big Orange Pantry (BOP) provides emergency food and basic needs assistance for students, faculty, and staff attending or employed by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The following items are in the greatest need: 

  • Paper towels
  • Toilet Paper/tissues
  • Diapers & wipes
  • Laundry detergent
  • Sunscreen
  • Razors/Shaving cream
  • Body lotion
  • Lip balm
  • Hand soap
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Body wash
  • Shampoo/Conditioner
  • Tissues
  • Deodorant
  • Kitchen Tools/supplies

Items can be dropped off in the Student Union Ballroom A during check in. 


Geier & Robinson Residence Halls Dedication
3:30 – 5:00 PM
Geier-Robinson Courtyard

Join us for the Geier and Robinson Residence Halls dedication ceremony from 3:30-5 p.m. on Friday, September 17, where we’ll celebrate and honor two African American trailblazers, Theotis Robinson Jr. and Rita Sanders Geier, whose fight for equality and social justice transformed Tennessee’s higher education system and the university.


Cornelius Eady Concert & Reception

Cornelius Eady Trio with Special Guest Concetta Abbate

National Book Award Winner and Pulitzer prize nominated poet Cornelius Eady has set his poetry to song with the Cornelius Eady Trio. Eady’s songs tell the story of passing time, the Black American experience, and the blues in the style of Folk & Americana music.


Knoxville Food & Music Sampler

Join the Center for Student Engagement and Campus Events Board for a Local Food Sampler and Music!  Have the opportunity to taste local food and hear local music. 


Stargazing
7:45 PM
Nielsen Physics Building

Come enjoy the wonders of the night’s sky with Paul Lewis, Director of Space Science Outreach at UT. The stargazing event will give a unique glimpse into the stars using the Nielsen Physics Building’s powerful rooftop telescope. Registration required for this event. 


Saturday, September 18

Family Weekend Big Orange Tailgate (included in Family Weekend Tailgate Bundle)
8:30 – 11:30 AM
Student Union Ballroom

Start your Vols game day with a delicious tailgate in the Student Union. We’ll have food, fun, and games for families and students to enjoy.

We are offering three seating options: 8:30AM, 9:30AM, and 10:30AM. Families must be registered for one of the seating options to attend.


Family Weekend Silent Auction
8:30 – 11:30 AM
Student Union, 270

The Family Weekend Silent Auction is a great opportunity for you and your family to support the Parents & Families Endowment and win some unique items compiled and donated by local businesses. Auction item winners will be contacted shortly after the conclusion of the tailgate and will need to pay in full and pick up their items on Sunday morning. 


Family Weekend Service Project
8:30 – 11:30 AM
Student Union, 362

Join the Jones Center for Leadership and Service to make posters of encouragement for the children of East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. These posters will provide uplifting messages that will support the children during their stay in the hospital.


Voter Registration Tailgate
8:30 – 12:00 PM
Humanities Plaza, Vol Village

Your family can participate by registering to vote at the UTK Voter Registration Tailgate and encouraging your student to come by and register.

Election experts will be at the tailgate to answer any questions you may have about Tennessee’s easy voting process. Tennessee voters can also visit GoVoteTN.gov or call the Secretary of State’s Division of Elections at 1-877-850-4959 for more information.


Vol Walk
9:45 AM
Pedestrian Bridge

Take part in one of UT’s oldest gameday traditions; the Vol Walk. At this time, the football team makes a ceremonial walk to Neyland Stadium down Volunteer Boulevard and Peyton Manning Pass.


Vol Football vs. TTU

Neyland Stadium

Join more than 100,000 Big Orange fans in cheering the Vols on to victory as they take on the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles inside Neyland Stadium!

Please note that Neyland Stadium has a clear bag policy. All items are subject to search at the gates upon entering the stadium. Fans are allowed to bring the following items into the stadium: cushions/seats without arms, small cameras, pagers, cell phones, and binoculars. Bottles, cans, large cameras, coolers, and stadium chairs with arms are prohibited in Neyland Stadium. All persons, regardless of age, must have a ticket in order to gain admission into Neyland Stadium.


Sunday, September 19

Sunrise Yoga in the Gardens

Join Family Engagement and staff from Rec Sports for a one-hour yoga session in the UT Gardens. Mats provided for participants. Registration is required for this event. Parking is available for the UT Gardens. Registration is required for this event.


Brunch at West Campus Dining

See what it’s like to eat like a Vol with your student. Use this time to connect and visit with other families as we conclude a great Family Weekend!  


Guided Tours of Neyland Stadium
10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Neyland Stadium, outside Gate 21A

Join us for an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of Neyland Stadium. Registration is required for this event.


Silent Auction Check-Out

Chosen Family Picnic
12:00 – 2:00 PM
UT Gardens

Join the Pride Center for a drop-in picnic celebrating all types of family and support during Fall Family Weekend. We will have lawn games, CJ’s Taco Truck, and free resources and swag for those who stop by! All faculty, staff, students, and biological and/or chosen families are welcome to attend!
